Airborne lasers have uncovered a network of roadways and canals. This shows an ancient city that links the famous Angkor Wat temple complex. 12th Century Angkor Wat is a world heritage site.
The ancient city of Mahendraparvata is the one whose detailed map has been produced. This city lay hidden behind thick foliage of forests. Laser pulses were fired from a helicopter that spent days hovering over the terrain. An on-foot expedition through the jungle later confirmed the findings.
Already years of research were done by Archaeologists on a nine square kilometer section of the ancient city’s downtown area. But the lidar or airborne lasers have revealed the downtown area to be much more expansive at 35 square kilometers. Archaeologists don’t know why this civilization at Mahendraparvata collapsed. Some researchers guess it could be the water management system. Archaeologists now hope to excavate the site as the next step.
