Los Angeles Clippers Get Doc Rivers As New Coach
Los Angeles Clippers gets new coach, Doc Rivers. In a rare but not unprecedented move of getting a current coach on duty, Rivers still has three years and $21 million left in his current contract with Celtics.
History of Doc Rivers’ engagement with the Celtics.
In 2004, Rivers took over the Celtics in the middle of the longest title drought in NBA history. He helped them to their 2008 title win and two years later lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. But since then Celtics have been on a downward spiral in the recent years. This year they finished only third in the Atlantic division and this for a team that have won the most number of NBA titles in history. This lack of performance had prompted a thorough rejig, a process which Rivers was not willing to supervise.
Rivers has the second longest stint as coach in NBA next only to San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich. Trades for coaches have happened half-a-dozen times in NBA history, latest being in 2007.
