Many parents get puzzled when their children’s performance suddenly dips upon entering middle school. Experts give various reasons why kids for this shift school including the transition from a comfortable class setting to a whole new environment. Here are simple ways to get your kid back on track.
Teach them time-management skills
If your child is enrolled in one of the good Dubai middle schools, it’s very likely that they are already provided with some time management lessons. As a parent, it’s your role to reinforce these skills, so your child makes them a habit. First, guide your child through creating a day planner, and encourage them to refer to it regularly. Teach them to subdivide their work over the provided period, and to stick to deadlines.
Assist them to become organised
Does your child often forget to turn in homework at the expected time? Can they keep track of their progress? If not, this is a signal that they lack in organisational skills. Start by buying them two binders, one for completed homework and the other for work that needs to be done. Talk to the teachers to find out what could be causing the problem and discuss possible solutions.
Teach them how to take notes
Most teachers start teaching basic note-taking skills at elementary school. However, some students need more guidance upon entering middle school. Take the time to teach your kid how to collect, evaluate, organise and summarise new information. Teach them how to note keywords and concepts rather than writing down entire sentences.
Assist them with study skills
A lot of students fail because they don’t know how to study for tests. They have no clue where the questions may come from. Teach your child to highlight essential textbook passages, make study cards and diagram posts. Help them identify when they focus better, day or night.
If you feel there’s has been a downshift in your child’s performance, this is the time to do something about it. Fortunately, all it takes is some parental support to set them back on the path to success, no matter how flustered they now seem.
